How To Enable 2-step Verification on Your Google Account

Two-step verification will add another safety net to your account. So, that you can take two steps to sign into your Gmail account. A six-digit code, in combination with your usual password, will be needed when you try to log in. It means that even if you have lost your password, hackers can’t break into your account. They would also need to have your phone physically.

How to Set Up Google Two-step Verification via (SMS or Call)

This is the two-step Verification method Google recommends, and this is what the setup process looks like.





  • Tap on 2-Step Verification.


  • Click on Get Started.


  • Enter your Google password to confirm it’s you.


  • Confirm your phone number. Click on the Send.


  • Enter the code that is texted to your number and click Next.


  • Click Turn On to enable two-factor authentication.

Note: If you get a new phone or try to log in on a public computer, for security purposes, you will receive Google verification code on your phone.

How to Set Up Google Prompt Verification via (Phone Prompt)

This is the phone-prompt Verification method Google recommends, and this is what the setup process looks like.





  • Tap on Use your phone to sign in.


  • Click on Set It Up.


  • Select you phone.
  • Click on the Next.


  • Enter the Gmail Account details and click Next.


  • Click on Yes on the Google pop-up that appears on your phone or tablet.


  • Click on the Turn on.


  • You can also add a phone to get Google sign-in prompts.

Note: If you get a new phone or try to log in on a public computer, for security purposes, you will receive Google prompt notification on your phone.

How to Set Up Google Authenticator Verification via (App)

This is the Google’s Authenticator app method Google recommends, and this is what the setup process looks like.

  • On the 2-Step Verification page, scroll down and click on the Set Up under Authenticator app.


  • Choose which phone you have and click on the Next.
  • For the next step – open the google play store, search “Google authenticator“, click on the install.


  1. Open the app and Click on the Begin.
  2. Tap on Skip at the bottom left.
  3. Click on Scan a barcode.


  • Click on Allow to grant camera access.
  • Scan the barcode from your computer.
  • Click on the Next.


  • Enter the code shown on the Google Authenticator app on your phone.
  • Click on the Verify.
  • Tap on Done! 

The Google Authenticator app used to generate random codes for your two-factor login, and along with your Google account. 2FA, is an additional protective layer used to ensure online accounts security. Most sites now require 2-factor authenticating (2FA) to be used to add another security layer to your login process.

A strong password with two-factor authentication is a good start. It adds another privacy layer to your account. In addition to your password, you will often need to enter random code every time you log into your account.

The most popular authenticator apps are Google Authenticator and Authy, but 1Password and LastPass password managers also offer the service if this helps you simplify your process. While all of them differ somewhat in features, the key features are the same, no matter which one you use.
